Trump declares war on Comey, over claims made in his book

Sheetal Sukhija - Saturday 14th April, 2018

WASHINGTON, U.S. - Reacting to former FBI director James Comey’s book - A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership - in which the fired FBI boss likens the president to a dishonest mob boss - the U.S. President Donald Trump shared his thoughts.

In his book, which is set to be published on Tuesday, Comey reportedly claims that Trump appeared to lean on him to go easy on former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was indicted on charges of lying to the FBI about his post-election contact with a Russian ambassador.

Comey, in his book, offers an overall assessment of Trump and writes, “This president is unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values. His leadership is transactional, ego driven and about personal loyalty.”

On Friday morning, Comey said in a television interview that Trump also seemed obsessed with an unverified claim that during a trip to Moscow he watched two prostitutes engage in an unusual sexual act.

The fired FBI director also said that Trump asked him to "prove that it didn't happen," and said it would be "terrible" if his wife Melania Trump believed the claim.

On Friday, Trump called Comey "a proven LEAKER & LIAR"  and a "untruthful slime ball.”

Targeting Comey in a pair of tweets, Trump wrote, “James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH. He is a weak and...untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst “botch jobs” of history. It was my great honor to fire James Comey!”

In reality, lawmakers from both parties had criticized Trump for his dismissal of Comey.

Meanwhile, Comey said in an interview with ABC, “I honestly never thought this words would come out of my mouth, but I don't know whether the current president of the United States was with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow in 2013. It's possible, but I don't know.”

In May last year, Comey's firing resulted in the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel to take charge of investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russians, who are alleged to have sought to influence the 2016 election.

Trump’s decision to fire Comey is the subject of an investigation into whether he sought to obstruct justice in the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Meanwhile, Trump allies and the Republican National Committee too reacted to the claims made in Comey’s book, in a bid to discredit both the book and its author.

Presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Comey "seems like a disgruntled ex-employee; after all, he was fired."
