BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 26,402 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total caseload to 2,322,056, the federal response center said Tuesday.

Many of Russia's new infections have been reported in Moscow, with 6,524 new cases in the past day, raising the cumulative count for the capital to 612,248.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 1,472 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the national total to 67,169.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases were imported and 1,467 cases were local transmissions.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 1,463 to reach 150,464 as of Tuesday evening, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The figure excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo earlier in the year.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's Health Ministry reported 6,472 more COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the national count to 1,113,543.

The ministry said that 285 additional deaths were reported, raising the nationwide tally to 105,940, while 823,586 patients have recovered.

COLOMBO -- Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a new state minister for COVID-19 prevention, as the virus has affected over 23,000 people and caused 118 deaths, local media reported Tuesday.

A statement released by the President's Office said President Rajapaksa had appointed Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle as the state minister of Primary Health Services, Pandemics and COVID Prevention, a new portfolio created in the government.
