JERUSALEM -- Israel assassinated on Monday a senior militant commander in the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces said, triggering a fresh barrage of rockets on Israeli cities.

Israel's Shin Bet security service and the military said in a joint statement that warplanes struck and killed Hasam Abu Harbid, commander of the Northern Division of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a militant group in Gaza that has been fighting alongside Hamas in the recent escalation. KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia recorded the highest single-day deaths from COVID-19 on Monday after the outbreak claimed 45 more lives, bringing the death toll to 1,947, according to the health ministry.

Malaysia has suffered a resurgence of COVID-19 cases which has forced the government to impose a nationwide movement control order till June to curb the spread. The previous record for single-day fatalities was reported on Saturday with 44 deaths. (Malaysia-COVID-19)

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 9,328 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,949,573, the official monitoring and response center said Monday.
